A job fair is a terrific way to meet face-to-face with an employer. These opportunities are more than just learning about job openings and current employers who are hiring. They provide several benefits to help you find a job faster and that is a good fit for your experience and skills.

Here are a few reasons why a job fair is an important part of a job search. 

Learn What Companies are Looking For

Job fairs provide an opportunity for you to meet with employers and learn what qualifications and skills they are looking for to fill a certain position. This helps you create a resume and a cover letter based on how you will best meet the company’s needs and wants. For example, if the HR personnel or recruiter says that experience is important to the company, you will want to highlight your experience on your resume and cover letter. 

Connect a Face to the Resume 

When you attend a job fair, you should bring several resumes with you. When you meet with employers, give a copy of this document to them. This allows the employer to connect your face with the resume and take any necessary notes. It is also wise to point out many of your strong features on the resume, particularly if it is a characteristic that the company is looking for in an employee.  

It’s a More Relaxed Environment

When you talk to a recruiter or HR personnel at a job fair, it is typically a much more relaxed atmosphere. You can ask questions, discuss your resume, and more. However, when you meet with the same person in a job interview, it is a more stressful experience. You want to make a good impression but the interview process could make you nervous and tense. The interviewer may not see your personality, you may be more reserved, etc. Plus, a job fair is a great opportunity to practice your interview skills.   

It’s Efficient 

Searching for a job can take a considerable amount of time. For example, if you are recently unemployed, you should spend 30 to 40 hours a week searching for a job. When you attend a job fair, you can receive dozens of leads in just a few hours. You can meet with one company that you are interested in working for and learn about multiple job openings. You can also pass out multiple resumes in a short period of time, rather than search for each company online.  

Plus, getting up from your computer and getting out of the house can do wonders for your job search. It can give you a mental boost, which will motivate and encourage you during the job hunt. 

Many job seekers may feel that a job fair is a little outdated and a waste of their time. However, when they come prepared, it can become an important and effective step in their job hunt.
