How to Manage Your Time Wisely

February is National Time Management Month! When you’re intentional with your time, you’re more likely to reach your career goals and set your future self up for success.

Managing your time wisely takes practice and dedication. Here are some tips for staying organized as you begin a new job or continue your search for a new role:

Set Goals & Stick to Them: Defining clear career goals for yourself will make it easier for you to know what to look for in a job. Whether you’re looking for temp to hire work, a part-time role or full-time position, it’s important to determine what you want and how you’re going to make it happen.

Setting goals also allows you to hold yourself accountable. If you set deadlines for when you want to accomplish things, you can track your progress and determine what continues to be important for you long-term, or if you’ve developed new career wants, needs, and goals over time.

Keep a Daily Planner: Not only does keeping a daily planner allow you to track your workload, stay organized, and increase productivity, but you can also use it to make a to-do list day in and day out.

Crossing off items on your to-do list will show you just how much you’ve accomplished, and where there is room for improvement. If you’re consistently meeting all of your goals and completing your tasks, you’ll know you’re managing your time wisely. If you’re falling short, you’ll learn that you need to make adjustments and redefine your priorities.

Develop a Routine: Setting a daily routine and developing a schedule will keep you on track to meet your goals by examining what you’re able to accomplish each day. Following a routine will help you to better understand what you have time for and what you can make time for in the future.

If you find yourself with extra time at any point of the day, try integrating new activities and tasks into your routine. Whether you choose to use that time to apply to a certain number of roles, practice and prepare for upcoming interviews, or take much needed time to rest, you can maximize your productivity and reach your career goals by being intentional with your routine the way you spend your time.

Ask for Help When Needed: Remember that it’s okay to ask for help and delegate when needed. Not everything can be accomplished all at once, and you’re likely to get more done when you can give all of your attention and focus to one task at a time.

By asking for help, you foster strong relationships with those around and work together to get the job done. Figuring out your priorities and delegating when needed is a great leadership skill, and encourages collaboration and teamwork.

Continue Learning: One of the best things you can do to further your career is to continue enhancing your skills and learning new things. No matter what industry you work in, there are still so many opportunities for learning and growth.

Refining your skills will enrich your resume, encouraging future employers to choose you from a pool of applicants. They’ll see that you take the learning opportunities presented in front of you and want to continue to grow in your everyday life and within your career.
