08 Jan Career Goals You Should Set in 2019
The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to evaluate yourself! It’s time to determine what goals and changes you can make to your life. But it isn’t just your personal life that you should consider. There are several career goals you can (and should!) set at the beginning of each year. Let’s take a look at just a few career goals you should set to become successful in the year 2019!
Improve your networking
Even if you’re happy in your current job position and have no plans to switch things up, networking should still be a priority. Networking can organically (and easily) lead to more opportunities. Speaking events, partnerships, and lead generation are just a few perks of successful. It can help you meet individuals who can offer career advice and even improve your influence in your industry. This year, set a goal to improve your networking. Participate in events and conferences, improve your social channels, and keep in touch with valuable contacts (without expecting things in return).
Learn a new skill
Is there a skill that could make you an indispensable employee? Maybe it’s graphic design. Perhaps website development could up your value quotient. Would mastery of a certain application or software program put you ahead of the pack? Take the time to become a master at this particular skill or application! It can be the difference between a promotion or avoiding company-wide layoffs. Goal: Find a skill or an application that you want to perfect this year and develop a plan to master it. You may find a class at a local university or online, or maybe read books, attend conferences, and network with others in the field to improve your skills.
Improve your work-life balance
No matter what industry you work in, your job title, or your experience, you need a strong work-life balance. When your life is out of balance, your physical and mental health can suffer. You may quickly become burned out, and your work performance may decrease. This year, choose one way to improve your work and life balance. It may be something as simple as using all of your vacation time throughout the year, improving your sleeping habits, or developing strong time management when at the office to avoid working unnecessary hours.
Increase communication skills
Communication is critical in the workplace. Whether you are a remote employee or working in an office, you need to be in constant communication with your managers and team members. While you may already have strong communication skills, there is always room for improvement. This year, you could set goals such as increasing your response time to emails and messages from co-workers, replying with more details, being more open and honest with managers, etc. Evaluate your own communication skills and determine where improvements could be made. Then, set goals to improve them.
As you set your career goals for the year 2019, set goals that are measurable and realistic. You will likely not double your salary by the end of 2019, so focus on both long- and short-term goals that will help you find success, be motivated, and make this year one of the best yet.
