5 Ways to Show Appreciation at Work

Showing appreciation at work matters!! Gratitude is a powerful thing. It does more than draw people to you, it also improves relationships, physical health, mental health, and self-confidence. There are many ways and places where you can express your appreciation and show gratitude, including the office.

But, showing your appreciation and not looking like a brown-noser can be a little tricky. Here are five ways you can show appreciation at work to your co-workers, employees, managers, and more.

1. Go out of your way to say ‘Thanks’

Rather than send out a quick email to tell a co-worker that you appreciate help with a project or the great job they did at work, walk up to their desk and tell them. Look the individual in the eye and express your appreciation for all they do. This will take only a few minutes out of your day but it can make a big difference in the day of your co-workers. Plus, it can give both of you an excellent energy boost.

2. Send a handwritten note

You may think that a handwritten thank-you card or a short letter is very old-school but this is one of the best ways you can show appreciation at work. This is not only a pleasant surprise for the recipient of the note, but by doing this on a regular basis, you can actually rewire your brain to become more grateful in your life. Bonus: Expressing gratitude can be a work-related mental health booster!

3. Treat your co-workers

Did your team work extremely hard to beat a difficult deadline or did a co-worker stay late one night to help you solve a problem that you couldn’t figure out on your own? In these situations, do something fun to treat these co-workers. For example, bring bagels or donuts for breakfast, take them out for lunch, purchase their afternoon treat at the vending machine, etc.

4. Give praise publicly

A simple way to acknowledge and show your appreciation to co-workers is through praise. Send an email to your team, letting them know what one co-worker did to stand out above the rest. Or, if possible, acknowledge them on the company social media page, a blog post, etc. Public praise can also help others improve their own performance and productivity at work.

5. Work harder

No matter if you are a manager or at the bottom of the chain of command, you can show your appreciation to those you work with by doing a good job and giving 100% to your responsibilities and performance. Don’t slack off in your responsibilities and your quality of work. The more you give to your job and the better you perform your responsibilities, the easier your co-workers’ job becomes.

Showing appreciation at work does not have to be a large event or a costly present. What matters is that you express appreciation often and to everyone who deserves it. This will not only help you develop strong business relationships but it will also make you a happier person and more satisfied with your own employment.
